Since 1960 onam is one of the biggest and most harvest festival which is celebrated with lot of joy and enthusiasm in all over the state by malayalees without thinking of religion, caste etc.

THE STORIES BEHIND KERALA’S STATE FESTIVAL
Onam is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali ,whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam .The King Mahabali (popularly known as Maveli), a traditional king who ruled over Kerala. He was greatly respected in his kingdom and was considered to be wise, and extremely generous.
Every person came on the earth for a reason and mahabali(king) is one of them who is gentleman with golden heart.His personality is very liberal .
There is two meaning of doing something for others one is you are doing something and expecting returns and
another is doing something but nothing to expect.So Mahabali believes in serving the mankind and serve humanity.

There was no discrimination on the basis of caste or class. Rich and poor were treated equally. There was neither
crime, nor corruption.
Since childhood Mahabali was very committed towards the Lord Vishnu like his grandfather(Pehlad) and father (Virochana).
After some years increased his fame in front of people because of his good qualities and power.then he wanted more Fame for that he was fighting with lord indra but indra and his army defeated all the army of mahabali .Then mahabali
will more anger to see his defeat and he went to go meet with rishi sukracharya to take more power.Then rishi told that for more power you have to do more yajna's so he was agreed with rishi's suggestion. he wanted to take some powers from lord Vishnu to do something big of his own and for that he was doing a very hard yajna to take lot of powers.
God very well aware that if mahabali gets the power he will misuse it ,the God became extremely shocked and afraid to see that he was achieved lot of powers by doing yajna's .They felt intimidate and decided to end his empire.They sent Lord Vishnu to earth in the form of a dwarf Brahmin to teach lesson to new Mahabali who was filled with EGO and attitude.
There was one weakness of mahabali that he was not deny to anyone who came for begging and lord use that weakness of mahabali for better environment. Vishnu requested Mahabali for land equivalent to his 3 steps and suddenly he stop doing yajna and granted him the land in the text of his pride.
Vamana began to expand and eventually increased himself to the size of profane ratio. With his first step, the lord brahmin covered the whole of earth and with the other step he covered the whole of the skies. He then asked the King where is the space for him to keep the third foot.
I offer all that is mine, my family, my wealth, and myself,
keeping nothing for myself.
Save me, Oh Lord, who has sought refuge in you.
King Mahabali with folded hands bowed before Vamana and asked him to place his last step on his head so that he
could keep the promise.
The heart that you gave to me I am offering to you --
what else can I offer at your Lotus Feet?
The brahmin placed his foot on the head of the King and trampled Mahabali to the head.

There, the King requested Lord Vishnu to allow him to visit his land and people once a year, and Vishnu granted him his wish.
It is the day of the visit of King Mahabali to Kerala that is celebrated as Onam every year.
According to legends, the festival is celebrated to commemorate King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam.The government promotes Onam internationally in a big way and celebrates Tourist Week for Kerala during Onam celebrations.
Thousands of domestic and foreign tourists visit Kerala to be a part of Onam every year.
MAJOR ATTRACTIONS
Onam is a major annual event for Malayali people in and outside Kerala.
* Pookkalam : People make designs in front of the gate of the house with the help of different types of flowers to welcome king mahabali. A new layer of flower is added with the each passing day. Even Pookkalam competitions are held at some places.
* Onasadya: At the day of Thiruonam, we are celebrating by vegetables. It is a nine course meal which contains at least five vegetables. It is served on the banana foliage . Some families even cook ten to eleven dishes on this day and even restaurants offer around 30 dishes in a row.
It is said that onam sadhya is incomplete without the brown rice…
* Onakalikal: This refers to all the games that are played during Pongal. Talappanthukali is a game which is played with the help of ball is the favorite of men.
They also involve themselves in the game of ammunition Women also performed traditional dances during onam festival and make pookalam.
* Vallamkali Boat Race: Snake Boat Race is another name given to it. It is the most entertaining game that takes place during Onam.
More than 100 boatmen compete with each other. They decorate their boats with different patterns. Many men and women witness this race.

* Elephant Procession: It is the most awaited event of the festival. The majestic animal, elephant is decorated with
beautiful flowers and other pretties made up of gold and also of other metals. Elephant takes round during the
occurrence of the procession. Elephants use their small gestures to interact with people and they also dance.
Folk dances: This is performed by the women and is one of the major attractions of the festival. Kaikottikali is a form
of the dance which uses claps and is performed on the occasion of Onam. Women who perform this dance praise the King Mahabali by singing.
Thumbi Thullal is a dance form which is performed by womeN on Onam.
They perform this dance in a circle.
